The Seven Modes for Guitar: Ionian to Locrian

The seven modes are different starting points within the same scale. Each has a distinct sound. Here

The seven modes of the major scale are different starting points within the same set of notes. Each mode has its own characteristic sound. Modes are not separate scales; they're rotations of the same scale, like seven different camera angles of the same building.

The Seven Modes

From the C major scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B), each mode starts on a different scale degree:

  • Ionian (mode 1, starts on C): C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Same as the major scale.
  • Dorian (mode 2, starts on D): D, E, F, G, A, B, C. Minor with a raised 6th. Used in jazz and some folk.
  • Phrygian (mode 3, starts on E): E, F, G, A, B, C, D. Minor with a flat 2nd. Spanish/flamenco sound.
  • Lydian (mode 4, starts on F): F, G, A, B, C, D, E. Major with a raised 4th. Dreamy, floating quality.
  • Mixolydian (mode 5, starts on G): G, A, B, C, D, E, F. Major with a flat 7th. Bluesy and rock.
  • Aeolian (mode 6, starts on A): A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Same as the natural minor scale.
  • Locrian (mode 7, starts on B): B, C, D, E, F, G, A. Diminished sound. Almost never used as a tonal center.

The Most-Used Modes

For modern music, the four most useful modes are:

  • Ionian: the major scale. Used for most pop and classical.
  • Aeolian: the natural minor. Used for sad pop, rock ballads, classical minor pieces.
  • Mixolydian: major with a flat 7. Used in classic rock, blues-rock, Celtic, folk.
  • Dorian: minor with a raised 6. Used in jazz, "Scarborough Fair," Santana's "Oye Como Va."

The other three (Phrygian, Lydian, Locrian) appear in specific contexts (flamenco, film scoring, jazz fusion) but are less common in pop.

How Modes Sound Different

The "characteristic note" of each mode is what gives it its distinct sound:

  • Mixolydian's flat 7 makes it sound bluesy
  • Lydian's raised 4 makes it sound dreamy
  • Dorian's raised 6 makes it sound brighter than natural minor
  • Phrygian's flat 2 makes it sound Spanish or exotic

Listen for the characteristic note when identifying a mode by ear.

Modes and Songs

  • Mixolydian: "Sweet Home Alabama," "Norwegian Wood," many Allman Brothers songs
  • Dorian: "Scarborough Fair," "Smoke on the Water," "Riders on the Storm"
  • Lydian: theme from "The Simpsons," much of John Williams' film music
  • Phrygian: "Pyramid Song" by Radiohead, much of flamenco

FAQ: Modes Questions

Are modes different scales?

Technically yes, practically related. Each mode contains the same notes as a major scale but treats a different note as the tonic. The intervals around the tonic differ, which gives each mode its distinct sound.

Why do most pop songs use only Ionian (major)?

Because the major scale's intervals create the most stable, resolved-sounding harmony. Modes like Mixolydian and Dorian sound more ambiguous, which fits some genres but not the resolution-focused mood of mainstream pop.

How do I know what mode a song is in?

Listen for the characteristic note. If a song in C uses an F# (rather than F natural), it might be C Lydian. If a song in G uses an F natural (rather than F#), it might be G Mixolydian.

Should I learn all seven modes?

The four most-used (Ionian, Aeolian, Mixolydian, Dorian) cover most music. Phrygian, Lydian, and Locrian are useful for specific genres but rarely appear in pop.

How do I use modes in my own playing?

Start by improvising over a single chord using each mode. Hear how each one sounds. Then write progressions that emphasize the modal characteristic note.
