Lesson 14 of 14

Putting it all together (and what's next)

Recap, celebrate, and the four directions you can go from here.

You started 14 lessons ago not knowing what a pickup was. You can now:

  • Tune your guitar from scratch
  • Play power chords across the whole neck
  • Play three open chords (Em, Am, D) and switch between them
  • Strum a basic down-down-up-up-down-up pattern
  • Play full songs along with audio
  • Play shape 1 of the A minor pentatonic
  • Bend strings up to pitch
  • Add vibrato to held notes
  • Solo over a 12-bar blues backing track
That is not nothing. That is enough to play in a band tomorrow if you wanted.

What is next: pick one direction

1. More songs

You have got the chord vocabulary for hundreds of songs. Spend the next two weeks just learning songs from the Guitaring catalog. Aim for two new songs per week. Repertoire is what makes you a player.

2. More scales

You know shape 1 of A minor pentatonic. There are four more shapes that connect across the entire neck. Each one is a week of practice. After all five, you can solo anywhere on the guitar.

3. Faster and cleaner technique

Pick a song faster than you can currently play and slow it down with a metronome. Bring it up 5 BPM per session. This is how speed is built. There is no shortcut.

4. Music theory (lighter than it sounds)

Why does A minor pentatonic sound good over an A7 backing track? Reasons. Learn the major scale, the intervals, chord construction. Two weeks of focused theory unlocks lifetime understanding. The Guitaring /learn library has guides for all of this.

Your daily practice from here

15 to 30 minutes a day. Mix of:

  • 5 min warmup (single-string scale runs)
  • 10 to 15 min songs (current repertoire plus a new one)
  • 5 to 10 min focus (whichever direction you picked above)
  • Optional: 5 min of just playing for fun. Do not skip this. It is why you started.
Welcome to the rest of your guitar journey. The hard part is done. From here it is just hours.
