Lesson 11 of 14

The Mixolydian mode (rock + blues outside pentatonic)

Major scale with a flat 7. The sound of every classic-rock solo.

Pentatonic gives you 5 notes per octave. The major scale gives you 7. Mixolydian is a major scale with one tweak: a flat 7 instead of a major 7. That one note changes the whole vibe.

G Mixolydian

G Mixolydian: G, A, B, C, D, E, F. Same notes as C major scale, just starting on G. Notice the F (the flat 7 of G). That's the magic note.

Why Mixolydian feels like rock

Compare to G major (G, A, B, C, D, E, F#). Major scale has F#, the leading tone that wants to resolve up to G. It sounds polite, classical.

Mixolydian has F natural instead. The flat 7 doesn't want to resolve. It hangs. That's what makes Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, Cream solos sound the way they do.

When to use it

Mixolydian is the scale for the dominant 7 chord family from lesson 5. If a song's main chord is G7, A7, or D7 (dominant 7), Mixolydian on the same root sounds great.
  • G7 chord vamp → solo in G Mixolydian (G, A, B, C, D, E, F)
  • A7 chord vamp → solo in A Mixolydian (A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G)
  • D7 chord vamp → solo in D Mixolydian (D, E, F#, G, A, B, C)

The drill

Find a "G7 backing track" on YouTube (search "G7 funk groove backing track" or similar). Solo only using the G Mixolydian notes from the fretboard above. Listen to how every note sounds "right" because the scale matches the chord.
Practice metronome
90BPM

If you don't have a backing track handy, just strum G7 four times, then play five notes of Mixolydian, then strum G7 again. The notes will sound like they belong.

Mixolydian vs. pentatonic

Mixolydian = pentatonic + two extra notes (the 4th and the major 3rd). When in doubt: use pentatonic for the safe notes, dip into the extra Mixolydian notes for color. That's how blues-rock players sound interesting.

Next: the Dorian mode. The flip side of Mixolydian, for funk and fusion.
