Lesson 14: Putting it all together (advanced preview), Intermediate Electric Guitar

You're 28 lessons into Guitaring (14 beginner + 14 intermediate). You can:

Play barre chords across the neck (F, B, anywhere in between)
Use the CAGED system to find any chord in five positions
Play dominant 7, major 7, minor 7 chords confidently
Use hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides in your playing
Solo across all five pentatonic shapes
Apply Mixolydian over dominant 7 chords and Dorian over minor 7 chords

That puts you in roughly the top 5% of people who own a guitar. Most never get past the open chords. You went further.

Three directions for advanced

1. Master modes across all keys and all 7 modes

You learned Mixolydian and Dorian. The seven modes of the major scale are: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian. Each has its own sound. Each has its own use case. Learning the remaining five over the next 2-3 months gives you a complete sound palette.

2. Songwriting and chord theory

You can play chords. Why does Em → C → G → D sound great? Why does Am → F → C → G sound resolved? Music theory answers these questions and unlocks writing your own songs. The Guitaring /learn library has guides on chord construction, the Nashville number system, and progression theory.

3. Songs with technical solos

Pick five intermediate-to-advanced songs and learn them solo-by-solo. Suggestions:

Hotel California (Eagles) — the outro twin-guitar solo is the gold standard
Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns N' Roses) — opening riff + outro solo
Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd) — David Gilmour's solo is masterclass bending
Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton) — clean, melodic, all about phrasing
Black Magic Woman (Santana) — Dorian mode in action

Each song teaches a specific advanced technique while sounding amazing.

Your daily practice from here

30-45 minutes a day. Suggested mix:

10 min warmup (scales: one pentatonic shape, one mode)
15 min songs (current repertoire + work-in-progress)
10 min focus (whichever advanced direction you picked)
5 min just play for fun

That's the routine of every working intermediate guitarist.
