Lesson 3 of 6

Zombie: same notes, more drive

Change nothing about the notes. Change how you play them.

Zombie goes round on Em, C, G, D, at about 84 beats a minute in our chart.

Play along

The notes

  • E: open E string
  • C: A string, 3rd fret
  • G: E string, 3rd fret
  • D: open D string

The new idea: eighth notes

Instead of one note per beat, play two. Count "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and", and play a note on every number and every "and". The notes stay the same. The song gets a lot more push.

Practice metronome
60BPM

Try it on open E first. If you play with your fingers, alternate your first and second fingers, and keep them moving evenly. Then play the whole loop at 60, four beats on each chord, before you go near the record.

Quiet and loud

Play four rounds of the loop lightly, then four digging in harder. Playing harder makes the song feel bigger, even with just the record.

You're done when: your eighth notes stay even when you change strings.

This is a root-note version, not a transcription of the record's bass part.
