Lesson 8 of 10

Brown Eyed Girl: speed

A fast one. How to bring a song up to tempo without falling apart.

This one is quick: our chart says 150 beats a minute, the fastest song so far, and the chords you know are all it needs. It is pure fun once you get there.

The new idea: how to get faster

Most people try to get faster by trying hard. It does not work: tension makes your hand slower. Use the speed control instead.

  1. Play it at half speed until it feels almost boring.
  2. Move to three quarters. Expect it to fall apart, then come back together over a few days.
  3. Only then, full speed.
When something falls apart at the new speed, do not push through it. Go back one step and play it clean twice, then try again.

Loosen up

Check your strumming arm right now. If your shoulder is up or your grip is tight, that is what is slowing you down. A fast strum comes from a loose wrist. Let the pick nearly fall out of your fingers.

You're done when: you are grinning. If you are not grinning on this one, go back to three quarters.
