Lesson 6 of 6

Your first whole song, on two chords

Everything so far, in a real song with only G and D.

You have two chords and a hand that does not stop. That is enough for a whole song. Tune up first, so you match the record.

Tool

Open the chromatic tuner

Tunes by ear via your laptop or phone mic. Pluck a string, watch the indicator center.

What I Got by Sublime goes round on G and D. Our chart has it at 96 beats a minute.

How to play along

Open the song and find the speed control. Set it to half speed. Yes, really. It takes nothing away, and your hands get time to think.

Press play and follow the chords as they light up. Strum straight down on each beat, and do not stop strumming, even if a change gets away from you. Catch the next one.

What to expect

The first time will feel like running after a bus. That is normal. By the third time through you will start to feel the change coming before you see it.

When you get through it at half speed without stopping, go up to three quarters. Then full speed, whenever that happens. Tomorrow or next month, it does not matter.

Next

From here, the next track is Your First Real Songs. It carries on from exactly this point, one song and one new idea at a time.
