Lesson 9 of 10

Pick your own song

Nobody learns guitar just to play a list. Go and find the one you want.

You have played eight songs someone else chose. Now pick your own.

Find a song you love

Go to Songs and search for something you actually want to play. Not something easy. Something you would be happy to hear in the car.

Look at the chords on it:

  • You know all of them. Wonderful, play along right now.
  • One new one. Good. Look it up in the chord library, learn it with the one-minute test, and then go for it.
  • Lots of hard ones. Try a capo, a small clamp that goes across the strings. It can turn hard chords into shapes you already know, in the same key as the record. The player shows you the shapes when you move it.
  • Nothing you can play yet. Save it. Come back in a month.

Slow it down

You know how this goes by now. Half speed. Keep your strumming hand moving. Practise only the part you keep missing.

Quick check

A song you love has one chord you don't know. What should you do?

You're done when: you have a song you chose yourself that you can get through.
